Matsudaira's music was characterized by its uniquely Japanese elements, particularly in his use of traditional Japanese scales and instrumentation. His works often combined traditional Japanese instruments, such as the koto and shakuhachi, with Western classical instruments in a style that was at once both modern and distinctly Japanese. Some of his most famous works include his "Hira-ga-Ura" for orchestra, "Kokoro (Heart): Concerto for Shakuhachi and Orchestra" and "Tales From Far East Suite."
In addition to composing, Matsudaira was also a professor of composition at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he mentored many young composers who went on to become prominent figures in Japanese music.
