William Denis Browne (1888-1915) was a British composer, pianist, organist, music critic, and friend of the poet Rupert Brooke. He was born in Leamington Spa and attended Cambridge University. Browne's musical career was cut tragically short when he was killed in action during World War I in 1915 at the age of 26.

Browne wrote a range of musical works, including choral and orchestral pieces, as well as songs and chamber music. He was part of the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century, and his music was influenced by composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst.

In addition to his musical career, Browne was also an accomplished music critic, writing trenchant reviews for publications such as The Times and The New Statesman. He was known for his wit and sharp observations.

Browne was a close friend of the poet Rupert Brooke , and it was at Brooke's suggestion that Browne joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He served on the HMS Queen Elizabeth, and was killed during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.

Despite his brief career, Browne's music has endured, and he is remembered as an important figure in the English musical renaissance. His complete songs and critical writings have been published posthumously, and he continues to be studied and performed by musicians and music lovers around the world.
