William Baines (1899-1922) was a British pianist and composer known for his works for solo piano and larger ensembles. He was born in Horbury, near Wakefield, in Yorkshire, England, and began composing at a young age. Baines had a unique and innovative style of composition that was influenced by Debussy and Ravel, but also had a distinctly English flavor.

At the age of 17, Baines won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under prominent composers such as Frederick Corder and Tobias Matthay. He also studied composition with Ralph Vaughan Williams.

During his brief career, Baines composed over 200 works, including solo piano pieces, songs, chamber music, and works for orchestra. He was a prolific composer and had a wide range of influences, which are evident in his works. Baines' style was characterized by lush harmonies, rich textures, and an almost impressionistic approach to melody.

Sadly, Baines' promising career was cut tragically short when he died at the age of 23 from tuberculosis. Despite his short career, he left behind a significant body of work that has gained renewed interest in recent years.
