Willem Andriessen was a Dutch composer and pianist, born on October 25, 1887, in the Netherlands. He came from a musical family, with his uncle, Hendrik Andriessen, and his brother, Jurriaan Andriessen, also being composers and pianists. Willem Andriessen received his early musical training from his father, who was an organist, and later studied piano with Julius Röntgen and composition with Bernard Zweers at the Amsterdam Conservatory.

As a performer, Willem Andriessen was renowned for his interpretation of Chopin and Beethoven. He performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras and was also a respected chamber musician. As a composer, he wrote a wide variety of works, including a piano concerto, a mass, many songs, and much solo piano music.

Willem Andriessen's music is known for its lyrical melodies and tonal harmony. He was influenced by the Romantic era composers, particularly Chopin and Schumann, as well as the French Impressionists. His compositions often reflect his love of nature and his Dutch heritage, with works such as "Three Impressions of Holland" and "Six Dutch Dances."

Willem Andriessen was a well-respected figure in the Dutch musical community, serving as the director of the Amsterdam Conservatory from 1949 until his retirement in 1957. He also served as the chairman of the Dutch branch of the International Society for Contemporary Music. He passed away on the 23rd of March, 1964, leaving behind a legacy of music that is still appreciated and performed today.
