Viktor Ernst Nessler (1841-1890) was a German composer of the late nineteenth century. He was born in Baldenheim, Alsace, and worked mainly in Leipzig. Nessler was primarily known for his operas, including "Der Trompeter von Säckingen," which was based on a popular German poem by Joseph Victor von Scheffel. This opera was one of the most successful works of its time and continues to be performed today.
In addition to his operas, Nessler also wrote many songs and choral works. He began his musical education in Strasbourg, where he studied under Gustav Satter and Joseph Rheinberger. To complete his education, Nessler went to Leipzig, where he became a pupil of Carl Reinecke and Ignaz Moscheles.
Nessler died in Leipzig at the age of 49. He left behind a legacy of beautiful compositions that continue to be performed and admired to this day.
