Vasily Sergeyevich Kalinnikov was a Russian composer who lived during the late 19th century. He was born in 1866 in Voin, Russia, and studied music in Moscow at the Philharmonic School and then at the Moscow Conservatory. Despite being diagnosed with tuberculosis early on in life, Kalinnikov persevered and went on to become a prolific composer, although his career was sadly cut short when he passed away in 1901 at the age of 35 due to complications from his illness.

Kalinnikov's style is often characterized as being Romantic and heavily influenced by Russian folk music. He is best known for his two symphonies, with his Symphony No. 1 in G minor being considered his most famous work. In addition to his symphonies, Kalinnikov also wrote several orchestral works, around twenty songs and choral pieces , as well as other compositions for chamber ensemble and piano.

Despite his relatively short life and the fact that he is not as well-known as some of his contemporaries , Kalinnikov's music is highly regarded by those who have had the opportunity to listen to it. His works have been recorded and performed by many notable orchestras and musicians. Additionally, there have been efforts to raise awareness of his music, with one of his champions being Leonard Slatkin, who has conducted and recorded his music with prestigious orchestras such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Overall, Vasily Kalinnikov was a talented and accomplished composer whose music continues to be enjoyed and appreciated by many today.
