Short bio Valentin Silvestrov
Full biography Valentin Silvestrov
Valentin Silvestrov is a Ukrainian composer and pianist born in Kiev on September 30th, 1937. Throughout his long and prolific career, Silvestrov has written over 100 works for symphony orchestras, chamber groups, and soloists. He is well-known for his unique style that blends together elements of the avant-garde, romanticism, and post-modernism.
Silvestrov began his musical career as a pianist, but eventually turned his focus to composition. He studied at the Kiev Conservatory with Boris Lyatoshinsky and Levko Revutsky, among others. Early on in his career, he was influenced by the Ukrainian folk music tradition, which can be heard in the use of tonal and modal language in his work.
In the 1970s, Silvestrov began to work on what he calls his "metaphorical" symphonies - works that, in his own words, "assemble, merge and synthetize materials from different musical epochs." These works are characterized by a dreamlike quality, with rich harmonies that seem to ebb and flow like waves.
Silvestrov's music gained international recognition in the 1990s, and he has since been commissioned by major orchestras around the world, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Silvestrov's standout compositions include Symphony No. 5, which was written in 1980 and is often considered one of his most influential works. His Piano Quintet is also a notable work, which combines elements of traditional classical music with a more contemporary harmonic language.
In addition to his work as a composer, Silvestrov is also a writer and philosopher. He has written extensively on the nature of music and the creative process, and his ideas have influenced a new generation of musicians and composers. Today, Valentin Silvestrov is considered one of Ukraine's most important cultural figures, and his music continues to captivate audiences around the world.
