Vaclav Jan Kopřiva was a Czech composer, born in Prague in the year 1753. He was one of the most significant composers of the Classical period in Czech music history and was known for his contributions to both church music and secular music.

Kopřiva studied music under the tutelage of Jan Zach, a violinist and composer in Prague. After completing his studies, he became the organist at the Church of St. Francis in Klatovy, where he composed many of his early works.

Kopřiva's music was heavily influenced by the works of Mozart, Haydn, and other prominent composers of the Classical era. Like many composers of his time, he was fascinated with the new developments in opera, and his music exhibits a keen sense of dramatic flair and an understanding of the human voice.

Kopřiva composed a significant number of works during his lifetime, including operas, oratorios, masses, and chamber music. His most notable works include his opera "Mlynská dívka", his "Stabat Mater" oratorio, and his "Czech Hymn", which became the unofficial national anthem of Czechoslovakia.

Despite his immense contributions to music, Kopřiva was largely forgotten after his death in 1789. It wasn't until the 20th century that his music was rediscovered and his legacy was finally recognized. Today, he is celebrated as one of the most important Czech composers of the Classical period and his music continues to be performed and enjoyed by music lovers around the world.
