Tui St. George Tucker was an American composer, conductor, and recorder virtuoso who lived from November 25, 1924, to April 21, 2004. She was also known for creating unique musical instruments and was a music director at Camp Catawba in Blowing Rock , North Carolina.
Tucker attended Occidental College in Los Angeles and was a well-known composer, particularly for her works for the viola. She composed and performed a great deal of early music and was commissioned to create a solo recorder piece by Ralph Zeitlin in the late 1960s.
Tucker's compositions were highly regarded, but she remains relatively overlooked, which sparked renewed interest in her work. A 2019 biographical research project by Dr. Reeves Shulstad focused on her life and accomplishments, and her work has been featured on podcasts, including Relevant Tones, and digital albums.
Despite passing away in 2004, Tucker's contributions to the music scene continue to be celebrated today, and her music remains a testament to her innovative spirit.
