Aubin studied at the Paris Conservatoire and was taught composition by Paul Dukas, among others. He won the Prix de Rome in 1930 for his composition entitled "Chant de la Renarde," which brought him significant recognition early in his career. Aubin taught at the Conservatoire de Paris and served as its director from 1962 to 1971.

Aubin's oeuvre includes a wide range of genres, including concertos, symphonies, chamber music, opera, and ballet. His style was heavily influenced by French Impressionism, as well as by his contemporaries such as Maurice Ravel and Albert Roussel.
