Thüring Bräm was a highly respected and influential Swiss composer, born on May 1st, 1944, in Gelterkinden, Switzerland. He began playing the organ at the age of ten, which sparked his interest in music. He studied at the Basel Conservatory from 1965 to 1968, where he was taught by Karl Barth, a Swiss theologian and music lover, and Hans Eberhard Dentler, a famous Swiss conductor.
Throughout his career, Bräm composed a wide range of music, from chamber music to orchestral compositions, vocal music, and electronic pieces. His music was often inspired by literary and philosophical works, as well as the natural world. Bräm also drew inspiration from various cultures, especially the music of Asia, which he often incorporated into his own compositions.
Some of Bräm's most notable works include his Symphony No. 3, "Les Quatre Elements," which was premiered by the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich in 1981, as well as his Cello Concerto, which was premiered in 1989 at the Festival de Lausanne. He was also known for his collaborations with choreographers and filmmakers, such as his work with choreographer Martin Schläpfer for the ballet "Medea," which premiered in 1998.
In addition to his work as a composer, Bräm was also an educator. He taught at the Zurich University of the Arts from 1979 to 2009, where he influenced generations of young composers.
Thüring Bräm passed away on February 24th, 2021, at the age of 76. His musical legacy lives on in his compositions, which are celebrated around the world for their originality, complexity, and deeply moving themes.
