Thomas Roseingrave was an English-born Irish composer and organist who lived from around 1690 or 1691 to June 23 , 1766. He was the son of another English-born Irish composer and organist named Daniel Roseingrave. Thomas was an accomplished musician and he is known for his compositions for organ and harpsichord, as well as for his vocal music.
Roseingrave was an organist at a number of different churches in Ireland throughout his career, including St. Patrick's Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. He was also the organist at Trinity College, Dublin for many years, and he taught music at the college as well.
In addition to his work as a composer and musician, Roseingrave was also a respected music theorist. He wrote a number of treatises on music, including "An Essay on Universal Musick" and "Introduction to the Art of Playing on the Pianoforte."
Some of Roseingrave's most notable works include his "Lessons for the Harpsichord or Spinnet," a collection of pieces for keyboard, and his "Sonata in A Major for Violin and Continuo." He also composed sacred music, including anthems and other works for the church.
Roseingrave was highly regarded by his contemporaries and his music was well-known in Ireland and beyond during his lifetime. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in his work, and several recordings of his music have been made available.
