Theodore Labarre was a French composer and harpist born on March 5, 1805, in Paris, France. He was known for his virtuosic harp playing and his compositions for the instrument. Labarre composed many works for the harp and wrote a widely acclaimed method for the instrument.
Labarre's compositions for the harp ranged from solo works to pieces for chamber ensembles , orchestra, and opera. One of his most famous works is the Variations sur Beatrice di Tenda de Bellini, op. 113, a set of variations on a theme from Vincenzo Bellini's opera Beatrice di Tenda.
Labarre was also a noted harp teacher, and his method for the instrument was widely used in France and abroad. His students included many of the leading harpists of his time.
In addition to his work as a harpist and composer, Labarre was also a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts and wrote music criticism for several Parisian newspapers.
Labarre died on January 25, 1870, in Bougival, France, at the age of 64. Despite his contributions to the harp repertoire, his music is not as well-known today as that of some of his contemporaries. However, his compositions and method for the harp continue to be studied and performed by harpists today.
