Composer T.J. Anderson, full name Thomas Jefferson Anderson, Jr., is an American composer born on August 17, 1928. He has studied composition under the tutelage of George Ceiga, Philip Bezanson, Richard Hervig, and Darius Milhaud. Throughout his career, he has composed a wide range of works, including symphonies, chamber music, choral works, and operas.
Anderson is known for his work in incorporating elements of both African American and European classical music into his compositions. This unique fusion of styles has garnered him international recognition and acclaim. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Rome Prize, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
One of his most well-known works is his first opera, "Soldier Boy," which is based on a libretto by writer Leon Forrest. He has also composed other noteworthy works such as "Songs of Illumination" and "The Mississippi River Suite."
Anderson currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, and continues to compose music. He is an active member of the music community and has been a professor of music at a number of prestigious universities, including Harvard, the University of Iowa, and the University of Colorado.
