Stjepan Šulek was a Croatian composer born on October 29, 1914, in the city of Pula, which was then part of Italy. He was trained in music from an early age, studying violin and composition at the Zagreb Music Academy. After completing his studies, he pursued a career as a violinist before turning to composition full-time.

Šulek was primarily a chamber music composer, though he also wrote orchestral and choral works. His music is known for its balance between contemporary techniques and traditional forms, with a focus on clarity and elegance. He was a prolific composer, with over 300 works to his name.

One of Šulek's most famous works is his "Chamber Symphony", which was composed in 1948 and is considered to be a masterpiece of Croatian music. The piece is a blend of lyrical and virtuosic writing, and it has become a staple of the chamber music repertoire.

Šulek was also a respected music educator, serving as a professor at the Zagreb Music Academy for over 30 years. He was known for his dedication and passion for teaching, and he inspired many generations of young musicians to pursue careers in music.

In addition to his work as a composer and educator, Šulek was also a conductor and musicologist. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Janaček Festival in Zagreb and was a member of several international music organizations, including the International Society for Contemporary Music.
