He started his career in radio in the 1940s and went on to become a prolific composer, writing over 8,500 songs, which were recorded by many famous singers. He also wrote scores for several motion pictures , and his work included the score for a television adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland".

Apart from music, Steve Allen was known as a versatile television personality. He was the first host and creator of "The Tonight Show" in 1954, and he later went on to host other talk shows as well. He was also an author, writing more than 50 books on topics ranging from humor to religion. In his later years, Steve Allen became well known for his role in the PBS television series, "Meeting of Minds," which featured a fictional meeting of some of history's greatest minds.
