Shulamit Ran is an Israeli-American composer born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1949. She is known for her unique blend of classical, contemporary, and Jewish music traditions in her works. Her compositions have been performed by prominent orchestras and ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony.
Ran began her musical education in Israel before moving to the United States to further her studies. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music in New York City before going on to earn her Master's and Doctoral degrees in music composition from the University of Chicago.
Throughout her career, Ran has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work as a composer. In 1991, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music for her Symphony, "Songs of the Soul." Additionally, Ran has been bestowed with a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, and the Rome Prize.
Ran's works are characterized by their expressive use of tonality and intricate rhythms. Many of her compositions draw on Jewish themes and motifs, such as in her "Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra" and her "Hallelujah" for chorus and orchestra.
In addition to her work as a composer, Ran has also served as a professor of music composition at several universities, including the University of Chicago, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Miami. She has also been a mentor and advocate for female composers and conducted various workshops and masterclasses to support and encourage them.
