Sethus Calvisius was a German composer, music theorist and astronomer who was born on February 21, 1556, in Gorsleben, Germany. He was born into a family of farmers and began his education at an early age, showing great aptitude for both music and mathematics.

Calvisius studied at the University of Leipzig, where he went on to teach after completing his studies. It was during this time that he began his career in music theory, focusing on topics such as rhythm, notation, and harmony. He published a number of influential works on these subjects, including "Melopoeia", "Exemplarische Organum-Lehre", and "Opusculum Musicarum".

In addition to his work in music theory, Calvisius was also an accomplished composer. He composed a number of works during his lifetime, including choral works and hymns that remain popular to this day. His compositions are notable for their creative use of harmony and counterpoint, as well as their expressive use of musical form.

Outside of music, Calvisius was also an accomplished astronomer. He was particularly interested in calendars and was known for his work in refining the Gregorian calendar, which is still used today in most parts of the world. This work had a significant impact on the study of astronomy and the measurement of time.

Despite his many achievements, Calvisius died in relative obscurity in November of 1615. However, his legacy has lived on through his numerous contributions to the fields of music theory, composition, and astronomy.
