Short bio Sem Dresden
Full biography Sem Dresden
Sem Dresden was a Dutch composer, conductor, and music teacher born in Amsterdam in 1881. He was known for his modern French-style compositions, which contrasted with the German-oriented composers of his era. Dresden's early music education was supported by his parents, and he went on to study at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he also taught later in his career. He also studied conducting with Hermann Scherchen.
Aside from his compositions, Dresden made significant contributions to the field of music criticism. He wrote for the newspaper De Telegraaf from 1918 to 1927, and was known for his literary critiques and insights into Romance languages.
Dresden's compositions include works for piano, small ensembles, and large orchestras. Some of his most notable works include the Symphony in C major, which was written in 1942, and his Concert Suite for piano and wind instruments. Dresden passed away in 1957 at the age of 76.
