Ruth Dorothy Louisa "Wid" Gipps was an English composer, oboist, pianist, conductor, and educator, born on February 20, 1921. She was regarded as one of Britain's best composers of the second half of the 20th century and wrote over 80 works , including five symphonies, concertos, chamber music, solo instrumental music, and vocal music. Gipps was the first British female composer to have a symphony premiered, and her music was performed by the major orchestras in Britain. She also founded three orchestras and chaired the Composer's Guild of Great Britain.

Gipps was born in Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, UK, into a musical family. Her father was a pianist, composer, and organist, and her mother was a music teacher. She began composing at an early age and studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where she learned composition under Ralph Vaughan Williams and conducting under Sir Adrian Boult. Gipps was also an accomplished oboist and pianist, and performed as a soloist throughout her life.
