Short bio Rubin Goldmark
Full biography Rubin Goldmark
Rubin Goldmark was an American composer and music educator, born in 1872 and died in 1936. He was born in New York, and his father, Leo Goldmark, was the younger brother of the well-known Austrian composer Carl Goldmark. Rubin Goldmark began formal musical training at an early age, studying piano with his mother and then attending the National Conservatory of Music of America, where he studied with influential musicians such as Antonín Dvořák and Victor Herbert.
Goldmark was a prolific composer and wrote works in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, operas, chamber music, and solo piano pieces. His compositions were often influenced by his interest in progressive ideas, and he was a proponent of the modernist movement in music. He also experimented with incorporating elements of Jewish music into his compositions.
In addition to his composition work, Goldmark was a respected music educator and taught at a number of institutions throughout his career. He taught at the National Conservatory of Music, the Institute of Musical Art (which later became the Juilliard School), and Columbia University. He was known for his emphasis on technical proficiency and discipline in his teaching, and his students included prominent composers such as Aaron Copland and George Gershwin.
Goldmark's contributions to American music were significant, both through his compositions and his teaching. While his works have fallen out of the mainstream repertoire in recent years, they remain important examples of the innovative and creative spirit of early 20th-century American music.
