Roy Ellsworth Harris (February 12 , 1898 – October 1, 1979) was an American composer known for his contributions to classical music. Born in Oklahoma, Harris wrote much of his music on American subjects, and is best known for his Symphony No. 3. His works were often described as having a folk-influenced style and were known for trying to express an American style , which contributed to their popularity.

Harris studied music in college and later became a teacher, working at various institutions throughout his career. He also co-founded the American Composers Alliance , an organization dedicated to promoting American classical music.

Harris wrote many notable pieces during his career, including 13 symphonies, a Concerto for Piano, Clarinet and String Quartet, and a Symphony for Band. His work has been performed by notable orchestras and conductors throughout the United States.

Harris's music was heavily influenced by the American landscape, and he often looked to nature as a source of inspiration. Throughout his career, he sought to create music that reflected the beauty and diversity of the American people and the landscape.

Despite his many achievements, Harris's legacy has been somewhat overshadowed by other 20th-century composers, such as Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. However, his contributions to classical music have been acknowledged as significant, and his work continues to be performed and celebrated to this day.
