Robert Parsons was an English composer who lived during the Tudor period, and was active during the reigns of King Edward VI and Queen Mary I. While few details remain about his life ), his musical contributions have endured. Parsons was an assistant to Richard Bower, Master of the Children Choristers of the Chapel Royal , and he contributed to the first generation of English Protestant composers. He was William Byrd's immediate predecessor at the Chapel Royal.
Parsons' music is primarily vocal, and he is known for composing Latin motets, as well as other sacred music. Some of his most well-known compositions include his setting of the Ave Maria and his First Service. His vocal writing is highly regarded for its expressive qualities and dramatic intensity.
Despite his contributions to English music, there is little known about his life beyond his musical works. Nevertheless, Robert Parsons remains an important figure in Tudor period music, and his compositions are still performed and celebrated to this day.
