Robert Moran is an American composer known for his works in opera, ballet, and orchestral music. He was born on May 18, 1937, in Denver, Colorado, and grew up in Denver and Lake City, Colorado. Moran began his musical career playing the organ at his local church and continued his studies at various universities and conservatories, including the University of Colorado, the University of Minnesota, and the Juilliard School.
During the 1970s, Robert Moran lived and worked in West Berlin as a composer-in-residence for the city. It was during this period that he composed some of his most significant works, including "Waltz in Memoriam: Maurice Ravel" and "Piano Trio: Written in Berlin." Moran's music is heavily influenced by the minimalist movement, and he is also known for incorporating graphic scores into his compositions.
Moran has written several operas, including "The Juniper Tree," "From the Towers of the Moon," and "Buddha Goes to Bayreuth," which explores the life of Buddha and was premiered in 2012. He has also composed music for ballet, such as his work "All Seasons Pass" for the Kansas City Ballet.
Robert Moran has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and commissions from major orchestras and ensembles.
