Rob du Bois was a Dutch composer, pianist, and jurist who lived from May 28, 1934, to August 28, 2013. He was known for his work in contemporary music and wrote mainly for chamber groups, orchestras, and vocal groups, experimenting with different compositional techniques and styles.
Du Bois was a self-taught musician who began playing the piano at the age of five, and his interest in music continued throughout his life. He studied law and initially worked as a lawyer but, later decided to follow his passion for music. He performed as a pianist and worked as a conductor and teacher, and his compositions were performed by many musicians in Europe.
Du Bois had several collaborations with musicians and was known for his open-mindedness and eagerness to work with new artists. He worked with composer Ton de Leeuw and pianist Reinbert de Leeuw, introducing new works for them to perform.
Du Bois also wrote the Music for Alto Recorder (Muziek voor Altblokfluit), a composition for the alto recorder. It was published by Ficks Music, and the work is an example of his experimental and minimalist approach to music.
Despite his contributions to contemporary music, Rob du Bois remains a relatively unknown composer outside of the Netherlands. However, his work continues to be respected and studied by contemporary musicians.
