Short bio Rhene-Baton
Full biography Rhene-Baton
Rhene-Baton was a French composer and conductor born on January 31, 1879, in Courbevoie, a northwestern suburb of Paris. As a child, he displayed a keen interest in music, which led him to study at the Paris Conservatoire, where he honed his skills in composition and conducting.
He began his professional career as a conductor, leading orchestras in various cities across France before landing a job as the conductor of the Casino de Paris in 1911. It was during this time that he started to gain recognition as a composer, with works such as the "Poème d'extase" in 1912 and the ballet "Le Roi nu" in 1913.
During World War I, Rhene-Baton served as an ambulance driver, and after the war, he continued to compose, conduct, and teach at the Paris Conservatoire. His style was known for its combination of traditional French harmony with modern rhythmic elements, and his works range from symphonies and operas to chamber music and songs.
One of his most famous compositions is the ballet "La Fête étrange" (The Strange Celebration), which was first performed in 1922. The ballet is a surrealistic interpretation of a city's festivities, with elements of jazz and other musical styles blended throughout.
Rhene-Baton's career was cut short when he passed away on May 11, 1940, in Frontenay-sur-Dives while trying to escape from the advancing Nazi troops. Despite the brevity of his life, Rhene-Baton left a significant mark on the classical music world, and his legacy continues to inspire composers and musicians to this day.
