René Amengual Astaburuaga (1911-1954) was a Chilean pianist, composer, and educator. He was born in Santiago de Chile and showed an early talent for music. Amengual studied composition with the Chilean composer Pedro Humberto Allende, with whom he developed a close relationship. In addition to Allende, he studied with other important figures such as Juan Orrego Salas and Carlos Isamitt.

Amengual's musical style is characterized by a combination of traditional Chilean folk music and European classical music. He was known for his innovative approach to harmony and his use of polyrhythms. His compositions often included elements of improvisation, which further highlighted his unique musical style.

During his lifetime, Amengual wrote numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. Among his most famous compositions are the "Three Pieces for Piano," "Duo for Violin and Piano," and "Rapsodia Chilena."

In addition to his work as a composer, René Amengual was also a dedicated educator. He taught music at the National Conservatory of Music in Santiago de Chile as well as at the National Institute of Music in Valparaíso. As a teacher, Amengual influenced several generations of Chilean musicians and contributed significantly to the development of Chilean classical music.

Sadly, Amengual's promising career was cut short when he died at the young age of 42 from a heart attack. Despite his relatively short career, his legacy lives on in the Chilean musical landscape, and his music continues to be studied and performed by musicians around the world.
