Renate Birnstein was a German composer born on August 7, 1954, in Dortmund, Germany. She began her musical studies in 1973, studying composition, piano, and musicology at the Musikhochschule in Cologne. She later continued her studies in composition with Mauricio Kagel at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.

Birnstein's works often explored musical traditions from different cultures, including African and Indian music, which she incorporated into her compositions. Her music has been described as innovative, with a focus on exploring new sound worlds and musical structures.

Birnstein was a prolific composer, and her works include pieces for orchestra, chamber music, and solo instruments. Some of her notable compositions include "Fata Morgana" for orchestra, "Hindi and German Songs" for voice and piano, and "Night Music" for piano.

In addition to her work as a composer, Birnstein was also a piano teacher and musicologist. She taught composition and piano at the Musikhochschule in Cologne and worked as a lecturer in music at various institutes throughout Germany.

Birnstein passed away on July 24, 2004, at the age of 49. Her contributions to contemporary music continue to be celebrated by those who knew her and by the wider music community.
