Full biography Raoul Pugno
Raoul Pugno was a French composer, pianist, and teacher who lived from 1852 to 1914. He is known for his contributions to Romantic music, having composed operas-comiques, ballets, songs, and piano pieces. Despite his significant contributions to music, he did not begin going on concert tours until 1893.
Pugno began his musical education early , enrolling at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of fourteen. There he won prizes for piano, harmony, and organ, and his piano teacher was Georges Mathias. He then went on to study composition under Massenet.
Pugno was also a teacher, having students that included the famous composer Nadia Boulanger. In fact, Boulanger met Pugno during her accompagnement exam, which would lead to him taking an interest in her career.
In addition to his compositional works, Pugno was also known for his performances, including as a soloist with the New York Symphony Orchestra in 1905, where he accompanied Rachmaninoff in his Piano Concerto No. 2.
Despite his contributions to music, Pugno's name is not as well-known as some of his contemporaries. Nevertheless, his legacy lives on through his compositions and the influence he had on his students and fellow musicians.
