Full biography Randall Thompson
Randall Thompson (April 21 , 1899 - July 9, 1984) was an American composer and conductor, known for his choral works. He was born in New York City , and studied at Harvard, where he later became a professor of music.
Throughout his career, Thompson composed a wide variety of works, including orchestral music, chamber music, and music for theater. However, he is perhaps best known for his choral works, which have become staples of the American choral repertoire. His most famous choral work is the "Alleluia" (1940), a short piece for unaccompanied choir, which still features prominently in choral performances today.
Thompson was also known for his work as a conductor and educator. He conducted many choirs throughout his career, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and was a professor at several universities, including the University of Virginia and Curtis Institute of Music.
Thompson's music is known for its use of traditional forms and styles, particularly his use of counterpoint. His works are often complex and challenging, but also have a sense of accessibility and attractiveness to audiences.
