Ralph Shapey (March 12, 1921 – June 13, 2002) was an influential American composer and conductor. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Chicago, where he spent most of his life. Shapey was known for his unique and challenging style of composition, which was characterized by atonality, dissonance, and complex rhythms.

Shapey studied music at the Chicago Musical College, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in composition. He also studied with renowned composer Stefan Wolpe in New York and worked as his assistant. Shapey was heavily influenced by Wolpe's expressionist and avant-garde approach to music, and he applied these ideas to his own compositions.

Over the course of his career, Shapey wrote over 200 compositions, including solo pieces, duos, trios, string quartets, chamber works for woodwinds, percussion, and piano, as well as orchestral works. He was also a respected conductor, known for his interpretations of contemporary music.

Shapey's works were often challenging both for performers and audiences, and many critics found them too difficult to understand. Nevertheless, Shapey's compositions were recognized for their innovation and originality, and he received numerous prestigious awards in his lifetime, including the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1993.

In his later years, Shapey continued to compose challenging and innovative works, despite suffering from Parkinson's disease, which severely limited his ability to work. He died in Chicago in 2002, leaving behind a legacy of music that continues to inspire and challenge musicians and listeners alike.
