Pierre Montan Berton (1727-1780) was a French composer and musician who was active in Paris during the 18th century. He began his career as a vocalist and harpsichordist before turning his attention to composition. Berton was appointed as the musical director at the Opra in 1777, a prestigious position he held until his death.

Berton was a prolific composer, known primarily for his operas. He wrote over 40 operas throughout his career, including Montano et Stephanie, La fille coupable, and Les Sabots. His operas were successful in their time, and he was able to collaborate with many of the leading librettists of the day.

In addition to his work as a composer, Berton was also a prominent music teacher. He trained many students who went on to have successful careers in music, including his own son, Henri-Montan Berton, who would also become a notable composer.

Berton was highly regarded in his day and was recognized for his contributions to music. He was awarded the Order of Saint Michael, one of France’s highest honors, in recognition of his achievements as a composer and musician. Today, he is still remembered as an important figure in the development of French opera and music during the 18th century.
