Peter Lieberson was an American composer known for his works in classical music. He was born on October 25, 1946, and passed away on April 23, 2011. Lieberson was the son of Goddard Lieberson, a composer and executive at Columbia Records. He started studying music at an early age and went on to graduate from Columbia University, where he studied with distinguished composers such as Vladimir Ussachevsky and Charles Wuorinen.
Throughout his career, Lieberson composed a wide range of works, including orchestral, chamber and vocal music. Some of his notable works include Rilke Songs, Neruda Songs, Songs of Love and Sorrow, and Ashoka's Dream, an opera which premiered in 1997. He was also a recipient of many awards and honors, including the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition in 2008.
Lieberson's compositions were often inspired by his Buddhist beliefs, and his music conveyed a sense of spirituality and emotional depth. His works were also characterized by their inventive use of orchestration and harmony, and his ability to create distinctive soundscapes.
Lieberson was married to the mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson , for whom he composed many of his vocal compositions. She passed away in 2006, and Lieberson dedicated many of his later works to her memory.
