Full biography Percy Whitlock
Percy William Whitlock (1903-1946) was an English composer and organist known for his post-romantic compositions for the organ. He studied at London's Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford , and later became an organist at St Stephen's Church in Bournemouth. He also held positions as the Borough Organist at Bournemouth and as the Assistant Municipal Organist at the Portsmouth Guildhall.
Whitlock's music is characterized by lush harmonies and a distinctive use of counterpoint, and he is considered to be one of the leading composers in the organ repertoire of the early 20th century. His compositions for the organ include works such as the Sonata in C minor, Fantasia in F minor, and the Plymouth Suite.
In addition to his work as a composer and organist, Whitlock was also a passionate railway enthusiast and wrote extensively on the subject. Despite a promising career in music, Whitlock's life was cut short when he died of tuberculosis at the age of 43.
Today, Whitlock's music remains popular and is regularly performed by organists around the world. His legacy as a composer and organist continues to be celebrated, and his contributions to the genre are recognized as an important part of the British classical music tradition.
