Paul Emile Ladmirault (1877-1944) was a French composer and music critic , known for his devotion to Brittany, a region in the northwest of France. Ladmirault's compositions often drew on traditional Breton folk music, incorporating it into his classical compositions. Claude Debussy praised his work as having a "fine dreamy musicality."
Ladmirault was born in Nantes, France, on December 8, 1877. He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Gabriel Fauré and Charles-Marie Widor, and later taught at the Conservatory of Nantes. Ladmirault was an active member of the Breton nationalist movement, along with other artists and intellectuals.
Ladmirault was a prolific composer, writing music for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. He was also a music critic, writing for the journal "La Bretagne Musicale." Some of his notable compositions include the "Suite Bretonne," "Divertissement," and "Symphonie sur des Chansons Bretonnes." Ladmirault also collaborated with other Breton artists, including poet Gwilherm Berthou.
Ladmirault died on October 30, 1944, in Saint-Nazaire, France. His legacy as a composer and his advocacy for Breton culture has continued to influence the music of this region. Today, his music can be found on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, as well as on classical music recording labels such as Grand Piano Records.
