Ossip Gabrilowitsch was a Russian-born American pianist, conductor, and composer. He was born on February 7, 1878, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and began playing the piano at a young age. He studied under some of the best pianists of his time, including Anton Rubinstein and Anna Yesipova. He later became known for the elegance and subtlety of his playing.
Gabrilowitsch settled in the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen. He was offered the post of conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1919 , a position he held for five years. He also conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 1918 to 1936, during which time he raised the orchestra's standards to new heights.
In addition to his career as a conductor, Gabrilowitsch also composed music. He wrote several pieces for the piano, including a Sonata in G Minor and a Fantaisie-Impromptu. He also composed a number of orchestral pieces, including a Suite for Orchestra and a Rhapsody for Orchestra.
Gabrilowitsch was married to Clara Clemens, the daughter of the famous American writer Mark Twain. The couple had one child together, Nina. Gabrilowitsch passed away on September 14, 1936, at the age of 58.
