Born on August 4, 1897, in Rio de Janeiro, Fernández began studying music at an early age and showed an exceptional talent for piano and composition.
At the age of 17, Fernández traveled to Paris to study music at the École Normale de Musique. There, he was exposed to the works of prominent composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, and Maurice Ravel, which greatly influenced his own musical style.
Fernández returned to Brazil in 1921 and dedicated himself to music education and composition, eventually becoming one of Brazil's most prolific composers. Some of his most famous works include the ballet "Batuque," the "Suite Brasileira" for orchestra, and the "Chôros no. 10" for choir and orchestra.
Fernández was also the founder of the Brazilian Conservatory of Music and was instrumental in the development of music education in Brazil. He was a strong advocate for the use of traditional Brazilian rhythms and themes in classical music, and he sought to create a distinctly Brazilian sound in his compositions.
Despite his contributions to Brazilian music, Fernández's music remained relatively unknown outside of Brazil for many years. However, in recent years, his work has been rediscovered by musicians and scholars alike, and he is now recognized as one of the most important composers in modern Brazilian history.
