Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was an English composer , virginalist and organist of the late Tudor and early Jacobean periods. He was born in Oxford, England, to a family of musicians and received his early training from his father, who was a member of the Chapel Royal. Gibbons later became a member of the Chapel Royal himself and served as its organist from 1604 until his death in 1625.

Gibbons is considered to be one of the last great figures of the English polyphonic school , which was a musical tradition that flourished in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He is known for his contributions to a wide range of genres, including Anglican services, anthems, and hymn tunes, as well as madrigals, consort songs, and keyboard works.

Some of Gibbons' most famous works include his First Set of Madrigals and Mottets , which was published in 1612, and his instrumental works for keyboard and viols. He was also known for his gift for dramatic writing, as exemplified in his piece, "O clap your hands together," which is often performed today.

Gibbons died suddenly at the age of 41 , leaving behind a legacy of music that continues to be admired and performed to this day. His influence can be seen in the work of later composers, such as Henry Purcell and even in the work of modern artists like Benjamin Britten. Gibbons' music remains an important part of the English choral tradition, and his contributions to the world of classical music will be forever remembered.
