Short bio Olaus Andreas Grondahl
Full biography Olaus Andreas Grondahl
Olaus Andreas Grondahl was a Norwegian choir conductor and voice teacher who lived from 1847 to 1923. He is known primarily for his marriage to the pianist and composer Agathe Backer Grondahl, but he was also a respected musician in his own right.
Grondahl was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway, and began his musical training as a chorister at the age of nine. He went on to study music at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany under prominent composers and conductors such as Carl Reinecke and Ernst Friedrich Richter. After finishing his studies, Grondahl returned to Norway and became a leading figure in the country's choral music scene, directing several choirs and founding the Norwegian Soloists' Choir in 1950.
In 1875, Grondahl married Agathe Backer, with whom he had four children. Backer was a highly regarded pianist and composer, and the couple often collaborated on musical projects. They were also close friends with the composer Edvard Grieg, who dedicated several of his compositions to them.
Grondahl continued to play an active role in Norway's music community throughout his life, serving as a music critic for the newspaper Verdens Gang and teaching at the Oslo Conservatory. He died in 1923 at the age of 76.
