He studied piano with Winifred Burston and composition with Sir Eugene Goossens in Sydney before moving to London in the early 60s to study with Richard Rodney Bennett and Mátyás Seiber.
Butterley's music was often characterized by its elusive qualities, with a focus on the characters of the performers he wrote for. He was known for his sparse compositions, which often conveyed a sense of controlled chaos and unpredictability. His work was influenced by a diverse range of sources, including poetry and the music of other composers such as Michael Tippett, Olivier Messiaen, and John Cage.
