Nicolaus à Kempis was a German composer born in the late 16th century. Not much is known about his early life, but he was active in the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods as a composer and music director. His musical works were mainly instrumental pieces, such as sonatas and canzonas, and he played an important role in the development of keyboard music during his time.

Kempis was greatly influenced by Italian composers, and he studied in Italy under the tutelage of Giovanni Gabrieli, one of the most respected composers of his era. He also worked with other prominent composers, such as Claudio Monteverdi, and gained recognition in Italy for his musical talent.

Kempis composed a number of works, some of which were published during his lifetime. His music often incorporated polyphonic textures and featured elaborate ornamentation. His works were particularly admired for their complexity and the technical skill required to perform them.

Despite his considerable contributions to the world of music, Nicolaus à Kempis remains relatively unknown to this day. However, his music continues to be studied and performed by musicians and music historians interested in exploring the development of Baroque music and the history of keyboard music.
