Full biography Nicolas Gombert
Nicolas Gombert (c. 1495 - c. 1560) was a highly regarded Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance period. He was known for his emotional and complex music, which was unlike that of any other composer of his time. Gombert wrote in the polyphonic style, based on choral passages, and his music was highly respected and influential in his time.
Gombert was born in La Gorgue, a small town in what is now northern France, and he likely received his musical education in the choir school of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Antwerp, Belgium. He served as a singer in the chapel of Emperor Charles V before being appointed as the maestro di cappella of the chapel in 1526.
Gombert's music was known for its intricate counterpoint, with multiple lines of melody woven together in complex and beautiful patterns. Although he wrote in a variety of genres, including masses, motets, and chansons, his sacred music was particularly highly regarded. He was especially known for his settings of the Magnificat, one of the most important texts in liturgical music, and for his polyphonic settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah.
Despite his success as a composer, little is known about Gombert's personal life. He likely remained in the chapel of Emperor Charles V until his death, and it is believed that he may have been involved in the music program at the court of the Duke of Brabant in Brussels.
