Full biography Nicolas Chedeville
Nicolas Chdeville (1705-1782) was a French composer, musette player, and instrument maker. He is primarily known for his arrangements and transcriptions of the works of other composers, particularly those of Antonio Vivaldi. Chdeville made significant contributions to the development of the French musette, a type of bagpipe.
Born in Rouen, France, Chdeville began his career as a musician at the Paris Opéra, where he played the oboe and musette in the orchestra. He later became a member of the Royal Academy of Music and a court musician under King Louis XV. Chdeville was also an instrument maker and is credited with inventing a new form of the musette, which had a more refined sound than earlier versions of the instrument. He also wrote music for the instrument, including sonatas and other works.
Chdeville is perhaps best known for his arrangements of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons for musette and other instruments. He claimed that Vivaldi himself had authorized the transcriptions, but it later turned out that no such authorization had been given. Despite this controversy, Chdeville's arrangements remain popular and have been recorded by numerous musicians.
In addition to his work with Vivaldi's music, Chdeville also wrote original works for various instruments, including the oboe, musette, and violin. His works include sonatas, concertos, and other chamber music.
