Mikhail Gnessin was a prominent Russian Jewish composer and teacher , born in Rostov-on-Don in 1883 and passed away in 1957. He began his musical education with his father, who was a local rabbi, and went on to study music at the Moscow Conservatory with well-known Russian composers and musicians. Gnessin's works often combined elements of Jewish and Russian folk music, as well as contemporary classical techniques.

He was one of the leading Jewish modernist composers during the Soviet era, and his influence extended further to his students, who also became notable composers in their own right. Among his students were Dmitri Shostakovich, who described Gnessin as "the person who taught me to love music," as well as other notable composers such as Nikolai Rakov, Nikolai Peyko, and Anatoly Alexandrov.

Gnessin's works include choral music, chamber music, and orchestral works, such as his Piano Trio in Memory of Our Perished Children , which was written in response to the loss of life during the Russian Civil War. He was known for incorporating Jewish melodies and themes into his music, creating a unique and distinct style that reflected his cultural heritage.

In addition to his work as a composer, Gnessin also taught at the Gnessin State Musical College, which was established by his family, and was known for his influential teaching methods that combined classical training with the use of folk music. His impact on the world of music continues to be celebrated and recognized today, through performances of his works and the continued influence that he has had on generations of composers and musicians.
