Mieczyslaw Karlowicz was a Polish composer and conductor who lived from 1876 to 1909. He was primarily known for his work in the genre of symphonic poems, and is considered to be one of the most outstanding Polish composers of his generation. Although his life and career were cut short by a tragic skiing accident at the age of 32, Karlowicz left behind a large body of work that has continued to receive critical acclaim and admiration.

Karlowicz's early musical training was in violin and piano, and he went on to study music at the Warsaw Conservatory, where he was a pupil of Zygmunt Noskowski. He also studied in Berlin with renowned violinist and composer Joseph Joachim, and in Paris with Vincent d'Indy. Karlowicz's music shows the influence of both German and French musical traditions, and he was particularly interested in the use of symphonic program music to tell stories and paint vivid musical pictures.

Karlowicz's output consists predominantly of orchestral works, and he wrote six major symphonic poems between 1904 and 1909. He also wrote a violin concerto, a serenade for strings, and a number of songs for voice and piano. Although his music is not as well-known as that of some of his contemporaries, such as Rachmaninoff and Sibelius, it has received renewed attention in recent decades, and is increasingly recognized as an important contribution to the late Romantic tradition.

Karlowicz was known for his innovative approach to orchestration and harmony, and his music often features lush, imaginative textures and colorful musical effects. He was also deeply interested in Polish folk music and incorporated its melodies and rhythms into many of his compositions. Despite his relatively short life, Karlowicz made a significant contribution to the history of Polish music and is remembered as one of the country's most important composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
