Michele Enrico Francesco Vincenzo Aloisio Paolo Carafa di Colobrano , who lived from November 17, 1787, to July 26, 1872, was an Italian-French composer who was born in Naples and worked in Paris for much of his life. He was known primarily for his opera compositions and was active during the late Classical and early Romantic periods.

Carafa studied music with various teachers in his youth, including Giacomo Tritto and Pietro Ruggi. He began composing music when he was young, and his first opera, "Gabriella di Vergy," was performed in 1816. Over the next four decades, he composed more than 30 operas, including "Le nozze di Lammermoor," which was later adapted into Donizetti's famous "Lucia di Lammermoor."

Carafa's operas were known for their melodiousness and expressive vocal writing , and they were popular throughout Europe during his lifetime. His music also showed some influence from the French and Italian musical traditions, and he was known for his use of orchestration and harmonies to create expressive effects in his compositions.

In addition to his work as a composer, Carafa was also a teacher and educator. In 1840, he was appointed to a position at the Paris Conservatory, where he taught composition and became one of the most respected music teachers in France. He remained at the Conservatory until 1858 and continued to teach privately until his death in 1872.

While Carafa's music is not as well-known today as some of his contemporaries, he was an important figure in the development of Italian and French opera during the early 19th century. His work as a composer and teacher helped to shape the course of musical history, and his legacy continues to be studied and appreciated by music historians and enthusiasts.
