Michael von Biel was a German composer, cellist, and graphic artist, born on June 30, 1939, in Hamburg. He studied piano, cello, and composition in Hamburg and Cologne. Von Biel was known for his experimentation with musical genres and styles, especially in the realms of electronic and electroacoustic music.
Von Biel's compositions often involved graphic notation, allowing for a more open interpretation of the score by performers. Some of his notable works include "Composition II for 2 Pianos" and "Jagdstück."
As well as composing , von Biel was also involved in Fluxus-related performance art. He collaborated with artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, and his work was exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.
Von Biel also had a significant impact on other composers, including Kevin Volans and Michael Karoli of the band CAN. He taught composition at the Cologne University of Music from 1976 to 2000, and many of his students went on to become notable composers themselves.
Michael von Biel passed away on September 7, 2000, in Cologne, Germany, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and experimental music that continues to influence contemporary composers.
