Michael Charles Colgrass was an American-born, Toronto-based composer, percussionist, and educator who passed away on July 2, 2019, at the age of 87. He was born on April 22, 1932. Having started his musical career as a jazz drummer in the Chicago area , Colgrass graduated from the University of Illinois in 1954. He then worked as a percussionist with several ensembles, including the New York City Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

Colgrass was an accomplished composer, having won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1978 for his work "Déjà vu" for Percussion Quartet and Orchestra. He wrote music for various ensembles, including orchestra, and often incorporated unconventional elements such as humor and headstands into his works. Colgrass was known for transcending genres and boundaries, creating music that was both interesting and accessible to audiences. His works have been performed by many notable ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony.
