Meliton Balanchivadze was a Georgian composer who lived from 1862-1937. He was born in the village of Surami, Georgia, where his father was the local priest. Meliton showed an early aptitude for music, and by the age of 7, he was already performing in public.

Balanchivadze went on to study at the Tiflis Music School and later at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. After completing his studies, he returned to Georgia and became active in the musical life of the country. Balanchivadze was a prolific composer and wrote over 100 works, including operas, symphonies, chamber music, and songs.

One of his most famous works is the opera Abesalom and Eteri, which premiered in 1919. The opera tells the story of a tragic love affair between two young Georgians, and it quickly became a beloved work in Georgia and beyond. Balanchivadze's music is marked by a fusion of Western classical music with traditional Georgian folk music, creating a unique and distinct sound that is all his own.

Tragically, Balanchivadze's life was cut short by the Stalinist regime, which saw him as a threat to Soviet cultural norms. He was arrested in 1937 and sent to a labor camp, where he died several months later at the age of 74. Despite this, Balanchivadze's music continues to be celebrated in Georgia and beyond for its unparalleled beauty and emotional depth.
