Mauricio Sotelo is a Spanish composer and conductor born on October 2, 1961, in Madrid, Spain. He began his musical career as a self-taught guitar player, but then went on to study composition, analysis, and electro-acoustic music at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid. Sotelo also studied at IRCAM in Paris, where he worked with prominent composers such as Tristan Murail and Salvatore Sciarrino.
Sotelo's compositions are characterized by a deep engagement with literature, art, and philosophy, marked by a profound complexity and an exceptional precision. His works have been performed by numerous prestigious ensembles and orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Orquesta Nacional de España, among many others.
Sotelo has received numerous accolades and awards throughout his career, including the prestigious National Music Prize in 2014, which is awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. One of his most celebrated works is the opera "El Público," based on Federico García Lorca's play of the same name.
